SANTA MONICA CANYON CIVIC ASSOCIATION
To: Santa Monica Canyon Residents
FIGHTING AIRCRAFT NOISE OVER OUR CANYON
Since mid-October, there has been a tremendous increase in the number of large aircraft that fly
over our neighborhood, especially in the early hours of the morning and the late hours of the
evening. The noise may be caused by pilots taking a short cut across the canyon as well as other
changes in flight patterns. We believe these changes may be related to the implementation of the
FAA's Metroplex Next Gen plan, a new gps-based aviation guidance system rolling out later this
year at LAX and other airports in the region.
The Santa Monica Canyon Civic Association has retained aviation attorney Steve Taber to
determine the causes of the changes and to negotiate with the FAA. This will include the
retention of an aviation expert to identify feasible alternatives to the current flight paths, e. g.,
have the pilots return to the traditional flight path. Mr. Taber will meet with Glen Martin,
Regional Director of the FAA, to discuss the findings of the expert and to try to negotiate an
agreement to keep the planes from crossing over the canyon and the Palisades. We hope this
simple step will result in a cessation of the increased noise.
Mr. Taber has informed us that if the negotiations are unsuccessful, it will be necessary to file a
Petition for Review of the FAA’s Finding of No Significant Impact as it relates to the Metroplex
Next Gen Plan, in order to preserve the Association’s rights to contest the FAA’s Environmental
Impact Report related to the plan.
The Association seeks contributions to fund Mr. Taber’s work on behalf of our residents. All
contributions are tax deductible as SMCCA is a 501(c) (3) corporation.
